A Daily Dose of Nutrition for Tribal School Children
About the Initiative
Annadanam, a nutrition-focused initiative by SoVo Foundation and IDF, is proud to launch "One Banana a Day", a simple yet impactful effort to support the health and well-being of schoolchildren in underserved tribal regions. Starting July 1st, the initiative will provide one banana every school day to over 750 children across three Z.P. schools, helping to address early morning hunger and essential nutritional needs.
What We Aim to Do
We aim to:
- Identify students at high risk of dropping out
- Provide practical, need-based support (not one-size-fits-all)
- Enable continued access to education
- Support both school-level and higher education journeys
- Create long-term impact, not temporary relief
Why this Matters
In many tribal communities, children often arrive at school without having eaten, not by choice, but due to poverty and food insecurity.
Bananas offer:
- A rich source of potassium, fibre, and essential vitamins
- Easy digestion and natural energy for growing children
- A cost-effective, locally available fruit
By starting their school day with a banana, children can focus better, stay active, and feel cared for.
Program Goals
- Serve one banana per child each school day (approx. 20 days/month)
- Reach 750 children in two tribal schools
- Improve school attendance and child well-being
- Create a scalable model for low-cost school nutrition support
Implementation Plan
- Partner schools identified in tribal regions
- Bananas to be sourced locally and delivered daily
- Distribution managed by school staff with oversight from Annadanam volunteers
- Monitoring: Monthly check-ins, child attendance tracking, and visual documentation
